Commerce
Shady Grove Baptist Church is located 10 miles southwest of Commerce, Texas. Commerce is located in Hunt County and is located about 56 miles northeast of Dallas. Commerce was established in 1872 and just 16 years later, Shady Grove Baptist Church was founded in 1888. Commerce was named after the thriving economic activity in the area, especially through cotton fields, farms and ranches. Commerce was incorporated in 1885. In 1889, William Mayo moved the East Texas Normal College from Cooper to Commerce. This college would later become Texas A&M University, Commerce. Commerce is known as the Bois d'Arch Capital of Texas. Shady Grove Baptist Church has had several members work or went to school at TAMUC over the past several decades. Commerce is also the home of the Northeast Texas Children's Museum, a favorite play place for the children of Shady Grove Baptist Church. Shady Grove Baptist Church can be accessed from Commerce by Highway 24.
